The Start of Swim Team

Sometimes, I feel like a mean mom (okay you got me, a lot of times I feel like mean mom). And this is one of those times ... I'm making my 7 year old participate in a swim team that seems to be akin to the baseball developmental league - not too competitive (I hope).  I'm making him do this for a few reasons - he has asthma so it'll improve the regulation of his breathing, swimming is a life skill (that I wish I had) and in that same vain, I don't want to be afraid taking my boys near water because they aren't water safe.

He was reluctant, but he came through - in exchange for the ability to go to Lego camp. Bribing (aka "a reward system") is still okay, right?

I thought he had a great first day - he listened to his coach

put his head in

and swam!!

I don't expect him to be Michael Phelps, but I am so glad there was a smile on his face.

Sometimes it isn't so bad to toughen up - especially when they end the day like this:

By the time practice was over, I knew we were good.

This is his “you were right Mom, it wasn't sooo bad” look.

I LOVE that look!!!

  1. These pictures are great! Some of my favorite childhood memories are swimming on the swim team. I too was hesitant at first (and definitely wasn't a fan of the early morning practices) but there is no better feeling than seeing your hard work pay off at the meets and watching your ribbon collection steadily grow :)
